As Good As Dead by Holly Jackson

Rating: DNF Themes: Young Adult, Mystery, Thriller, Crime Thoughts: So disappointed. I loved the other two books and really loved Pip so to me this story was really a let down. There were small things such as Xanex in the UK, that nuts fit on bolts not screws and the medical/psychological treatment of PTSD aren't how we work in the real world really took me out of the story this time. Pip did not really feel like Pip at all this time (although I understand what Holly was trying to do) and the repetitions of it were a buy much. Also the trying to force a full circle thing was way to much for me, cheesy and I eye rolled in more than one instance at it.

The House in the Woods by Yvette Fielding

Rating: DNF Themes: Horror, Middle Grade, Halloween, Supernatural Thoughts: I have read and liked middle grade and young stories before so thought I'd give this one a try. Personally i found that there was too much he said she said he said repeatedly and too much descriptions for me. However, the action scenes themselves weren't bad so it likely was just as it had been written for a much younger audience than myself.

The Boy Who Drew Auschwitz by Thomas Geve

Rating: 5 Stars Themes: Memoir, Non-Fiction, Holocaust Thoughts: This is gritty, real and more than a little heartbreaking. As a child who wrote of his experiences straight after there isn't an influential of others saying what is and isn't acceptable. As a result we get to see the reality of prisoners using and even turning on each other as well as the glimpses of hope (school doctor, the nurse that changed his name, those who helped change his triangle) which ultimately saved his life. Favourite Quote: "This grim chapter of our past was created by people and it is people who can create a brighter future."

The Cheat Sheet by Sarah Adams

Rating: DNF Themes: Romance, Friends to Lovers, Sports Romance Thoughts: Cringey cliche that i genuinely couldn't continue. I actually put this book down and then tried again to force myself to read it to get this far. They weren't behaving like grown adults, it seemed like the author was throwing in any sports achievement she could think if as it came into her head and there was 100% an I'm not like other girls vibe comic from Bree.

The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling

Rating:  4 Stars Themes: Romance, Enemies to Lovers, Fantasy, Magic Thoughts: This is the first Witchy romance I've read. Sweet, Rhys was definitely redeemable in ny book although Vivi's quips to him while they decided how to feel about each other as adults was entertaining. Can't wait till the next installment comes out.  Favourite Quote: "The best cure for anything was candles and a bath."

Never, Never by Serena Valentino

Rating: 4 Stars Themes: Fairy Tale Retelling, Young Adult, Fantasy Thoughts: Only Valentino could make us feel sorry for Captain Hook but all he wanted was to be where he had friends and felt like he fit in. But with the Odd Sisters meddling and Peters rejection, it all went wrong and he ended ho a villain. It's interesting to see how different things such as absent parents and the strong desire to fit in can lead someone into becoming a villain in someone elses tale.  Favourite Quote: "Realising one's dreams can be a terrifying venture, for fear they don't meet one's expectations."

The Colour Purple by Alice Walker

Rating: 5 Stars Themes: Classics, African American, Feminist, Historical Fiction Thoughts: This is a very important piece of literature with an important message. The lives of Ceilie and Netty are complex and sometimes heartbreaking but their strength and resilience can be inspiring and a warning to us all.  Favourite Quote: "Do not be offended, Sister Nettie, but our people pity women such as you who are cast out, we know not from where, into a world unknown to you, where you must struggle all alone, for yourself.”
